McCauley, Charles Stewart (1793–1869) naval officer; born in Philadelphia. He was the commandant of the Norfolk, Va., navy yard (1860–61). He ordered the yard to be destroyed rather than allow it to fall into Confederate hands (1861). His efforts were only partly successful as the Confederates gained much matériel from the site.
