McClellan, George

McClellan, George (1796–1847) surgeon; born in Woodstock, Conn. (father of George Brinton McClellan). A brilliant teacher and surgeon in Philadelphia, he founded Jefferson Medical College (1825) with much dissent from the University of Pennsylvania. The trustees dissolved the faculty in 1839, so he left and founded the medical college of Pennsylvania College (Gettysburg, Pa.).
