In the southeastern corner of OK; organized Nov 16, 1907 from Choctaw lands. Name Origin: For a prominent Choctaw family, of which the father and his three sons each served as chief of the Choctaw Nation.

Area (sq mi): 1901.32 (land 1852.26; water 49.07). Pop per sq mi: 18.40.
Pop 2005: 33,992. State rank: 29. Pop change: 2000-20005 -1.20%; 1990-2000 2.90%. Pop 2000: 34,402 (White 69.50%; Black or African American 9.30%; Hispanic or Latino 3.10%; Asian 0.20%; Other 19.90%). Foreign born: 1.80%. Median age: 36.00.
Income 2000: per capita $13,693; median household $24,162; Pop below poverty level: 24.70%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $18,540-$20,531.
