In southwestern corner of MO, south of Joplin; organized Mar 3, 1849 from Newton County. Name Origin: For Sgt. Alexander McDonald, a soldier in the American Revolution.

Area (sq mi): 539.70 (land 539.51; water 0.19). Pop per sq mi: 42.30.
Pop 2005: 22,844. State rank: 50. Pop change: 2000-20005 5.40%; 1990-2000 28.00%. Pop 2000: 21,681 (White 84.60%; Black or African American 0.20%; Hispanic or Latino 9.40%; Asian 0.10%; Other 10.00%). Foreign born: 5.60%. Median age: 34.30.
Income 2000: per capita $13,175; median household $27,010; Pop below poverty level: 20.70%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $17,395-$20,395.
