In west-central IL southwest of Peoria; organized Jan 25, 1826 from Schuyler County. Name Origin: For Capt. Thomas McDonough (1783-1825), naval officer in the war against Barbary pirates near Tripoli and in the War of 1812.

Area (sq mi): 590.02 (land 589.27; water 0.75). Pop per sq mi: 54.20.
Pop 2005: 31,966. State rank: 47. Pop change: 2000-20005 -2.90%; 1990-2000 -6.60%. Pop 2000: 32,913 (White 92.00%; Black or African American 3.50%; Hispanic or Latino 1.50%; Asian 2.00%; Other 1.60%). Foreign born: 2.80%. Median age: 29.00.
Income 2000: per capita $15,890; median household $32,141; Pop below poverty level: 19.80%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $20,780-$21,066.
