McDowell, Mary Eliza (1854–1936) social reformer; born in Cincinnati, Ohio. Educated in Illinois' public and private schools, she became a renowned public health reformer as director of the University of Chicago Settlement House (1894–1929). She also campaigned for women's rights, labor organizations, and interracial cooperation.
