McKellar, Kenneth (Douglas) (1869–1957) U.S. representative/senator; born in Richmond, Ala. Elected to the U.S. House of Representatives (Dem., Tenn.; 1911–17) and to the U.S. Senate (1917–53), he exercised power through his positions on crucial committees. He gained his greatest public exposure through his strong opposition to the appointment of David E. Lilienthal to head the Tennessee Valley Authority and then the Atomic Energy Commission.
