On the central western border of ND, southwest of Minot; organized Mar 9, 1883 (prior to statehood) from Howard County; which was discontinued. McKenzie County eliminated in 1891 for lack of settlement; present county formed 1905. Name Origin: For Alexander McKenzie (1851-1922), sheriff of Burleigh County and a powerful political leader.
