McKenzie County eliminated in 1891 for lack of settlement; present county formed 1905. Name Origin: For Alexander McKenzie (1851-1922), sheriff of Burleigh County and a powerful political leader. Area (sq mi): 2860.89 (land 2742.02; water 118.87). Pop per sq mi: 2.00. Pop 2005: 5,594. State rank: 22. Pop change: 2000-20005 -2.50%; 1990-2000 -10.10%.
