On the northwestern border of NM, west of Santa Fe; organized Feb 23, 1899 from Bernalillo, Valencia, and San Juan counties. Name Origin: For William McKinley (1843-1901), twenty-fifth U.S. president.

Area (sq mi): 5455.22 (land 5448.72; water 6.49). Pop per sq mi: 13.20.
Pop 2005: 71,918. State rank: 6. Pop change: 2000-20005 -3.90%; 1990-2000 23.30%. Pop 2000: 74,798 (White 11.90%; Black or African American 0.40%; Hispanic or Latino 12.40%; Asian 0.50%; Other 82.70%). Foreign born: 1.80%. Median age: 26.90.
Income 2000: per capita $9,872; median household $25,005; Pop below poverty level: 36.10%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $13,549-$16,437.
