McMaster, James A. (Alphonsus) (1820–86) religious journalist; born in Duanesburg, N.Y. An archconservative Catholic convert and antiabolitionist, he founded the Catholic Freeman's Journal (1848) and edited it thereafter. In 1861 he was imprisoned, and his journal temporarily suppressed, for attacks on Abraham Lincoln.
