McNary, Charles (Linza) (1874–1944) U.S. senator; born near Salem, Ore. Originally appointed and then elected to the U.S. Senate (Rep., Ore.; 1917–44), he prompted legislation involving agriculture, reforestation, irrigation, and hydroelectric power. As Senate minority leader, he opposed some of President Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal measures, but supported others such as Social Security.
