McNary, Charles (Linza) (1874–1944) U.S. senator; born near Salem, Ore. Originally appointed and then elected to the U.S. Senate (Rep., Ore.; 1917–44), he prompted legislation involving agriculture, reforestation, irrigation, and hydroelectric power. As Senate minority leader, he opposed some of President Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal measures, but supported others such as Social Security. He was Wendell Wilkie's vice-presidential running mate in 1940.
