Mead Margaret

(1901-78) US CULTURAL ANTHROPOLOGIST. Major works include Coming of Age in Samoa (1928), Growing Up in New Guinea (1930), Sex and Temperament in Three Primitive Societies (1935). Her early work was concerned to illustrate that gendered patterns of behaviour were culturally, not biologically, determined. Her research into patterns of child-rearing was particularly influential in the NATURE-NURTURE DEBATE and instrumental in co-founding the US CULTURE AND PERSONALITY school. Her later work was concerned with applying the insights gained from her anthropology to US society, and though the accuracy of her ethnographies has been much criticized, her activities as an early feminist and reformer are still significant.
