Meagher County, Montana 15 W Main St White Sulphur Springs, MT 59645 Phone: (406) 547-3612 Fax: (406) 547-3388 In central MT, east of Helena; original county; organized Nov 16, 1867 (prior to statehood) from Chouteau and Gallatin counties; annexed part of Fergus County in 1911. Name Origin: For Thomas Francis Meagher (1823-67), Irish revolutionary tried for sedition and banished to Tasmania. He escaped to New York Cilty, where he practiced law. He became a brigadier general in the Civil War and led the "Irish Brigade." He was acting governor of MT Territory (1865-66). Area (sq mi): 2394.83 (land 2391.82; water 3.02). Pop per sq mi: 0.80. Pop 2005: 1,999. State rank: 46. Pop change: 2000-20005 3.50%; 1990-2000 6.20%. Pop 2000: 1,932 (White 96.80%; Black or African American 0.00%; Hispanic or Latino 1.50%; Asian 0.20%; Other 2.70%).
