In central MT, east of Helena; original county; organized Nov 16, 1867 (prior to statehood) from Chouteau and Gallatin counties; annexed part of Fergus County in 1911. Name Origin: For Thomas Francis Meagher (1823-67), Irish revolutionary tried for sedition and banished to Tasmania. He escaped to New York Cilty, where he practiced law. He became a brigadier general in the Civil War and led the "Irish Brigade." He was acting governor of MT Territory (1865-66).
