mean time between failures [′mēn ′tīm bi‚twēn ′fāl·yərz]
(computer science)
A measure of the reliability of a computer system, equal to average operating time of equipment between failures, as calculated on a statistical basis from the known failure rates of various components of the system. Abbreviated MTBF.

(specification)Mean Time Between Failures - (MTBF, or "Mean Time Between Faults") The average time (usually expressed in hours) that a component works without failure. It is calculated by dividing the total number of failures into the total number of operating hours observed. The term can also mean the length of time a user may reasonably expect a device or system to work before an incapacitating fault occurs.

See also Mean Time To Recovery.

The upgrade will extend the life of the laser and, increase its reliability, accuracy and mean time between failures, too.
Annual Failure Rate (AFR) and Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF) are common examples.
Expanding clusters of commoditized servers has resulted in higher failure rates and lower mean time between failures (MTBF) because of the large number of nodes and the length of time users want to run parallel applications.
