meanderExtreme U-bend in a stream, usually occurring in a series, that is caused by flow characteristics of the water. Meanders form in stream-deposited sediments and may stack up upstream of an obstruction, resulting in a gooseneck or extremely bowed meander. A cutoff may form through the gooseneck and allow the former meander bend to be sealed off as an oxbow lake. Silt deposits may eventually fill the lake to form a marsh or a meander scar. meander an ornamental pattern, esp as used in ancient Greek architecture meander [mē′an·dər] (hydrology) A sharp, sinuous loop or curve in a stream, usually part of a series. | RAMBLING RIVER In the lab, scientists are studying how vegetation affects the formation and evolution of meandering rivers, one of the most common features of many landscapes. The crisis is rooted in approvals by the city of Florence years ago that allowed housing in an area that land-protection advocates and others believe is too close to a meandering river. City officials seek just such community input on the Los Angeles River in order to fashion a grandiose plan to turn 32 miles of drab flood-control channels into a meandering river walk of parks, paths, restaurants and housing. |
