Mechem, Edwin (Leard) (1912– ) governor, lawyer; born in Alamogordo, N.M. A lawyer in Las Cruces, N.M. (1939–50), he also worked as an FBI agent (1942–45) and served on the State Police Commission. The first Republican governor in twenty years (1951–55, 1957–59, 1961–62), he was popular despite limited legislative success, retiring to fill out a term in the United States Senate (1963–64).
