In south-central TX, west of San Antonio; organized Feb 12, 1848 from Bexar County. Name Origin: For the Medina River and Lake, in the northern part of the county. Possibly named for a member of Alonzo de Leon's expedition into TX (1689): either Pedro Medina, an engineer, or Nicolas de Medina, a sergeant major.

Area (sq mi): 1334.53 (land 1327.76; water 6.77). Pop per sq mi: 32.40.
Pop 2005: 43,027. State rank: 69. Pop change: 2000-20005 9.50%; 1990-2000 43.90%. Pop 2000: 39,304 (White 50.70%; Black or African American 2.20%; Hispanic or Latino 45.50%; Asian 0.30%; Other 18.10%). Foreign born: 4.10%. Median age: 34.40.
Income 2000: per capita $15,210; median household $36,063; Pop below poverty level: 15.40%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $19,693-$21,147.

In north-central OH, northwest of Akron; organized Feb 18, 1812 from Portage County. Name Origin: Named for the city in Saudi Arabia to which Muhammad (c. 570-632), founder of Islam, fled from Mecca in 622.
