Medjerda

a river in North Africa, in Algeria and Tunisia. Length, 460 km; basin area, 22,000 sq km. It flows out of the eastern spurs of the Tell Atlas (Medjerda Mountains) and into the Gulf of Tunis, forming a delta. The Medjerda is noted for the sharp fluctuations in its discharge: from 3-4 cu m per sec in summer to 1,500-2,500 cu m per sec and even 13,000 cu m per sec after strong winter rains. There are reservoirs used for irrigation on the Medjerda. The river valley is an important Tunisian agricultural region.
