Medvedev, Grigorii Sergeevich
Born Mar. 5 (18), 1904; in the village of Malye Lyzi, in present-day Baltasi Raion, Tatar ASSR; died Nov. 20, 1938. Soviet Udmurt writer. Medvedev was the son of a peasant. He graduated from the Mozhga Pedagogical Technicum in 1925 and in the same year began to appear in print. He wrote the first Udmurt sociopsychological trilogy Löya besmen (Into the New Channel, 1932; On the Slope of Kyikar, 1934; and Great Day, 1936; published 1959). The trilogy describes the intellectual growth of the Udmurt peasantry in the process of collectivization. Medvedev is the author of collections of stories and essays, including The Telegraph Poles Sing (1930) and Storming the Flax (1932). Medvedev translated several works by M. Gorky into Udmurt.
