meerkat: see mongoose mongoose, name for a large number of small, carnivorous, terrestrial Old World mammals of the civet family. They are found in S Asia and in Africa, with one species extending into S Spain.

It is a burrowing carnivore found in southwestern Africa that differs from mongooses in having four (rather than five) toes on each foot. Meerkats are noted for their constant vigilance for predators. This sentinel behaviour involves one member of the group finding an elevated position, standing on its hind legs, and alerting the group of danger when it is seen. The meerkat grows to a total length of 17–24 in. (43–60 cm). Insects and other small animals constitute most of its diet, but bulbous roots are also eaten for the water they contain. It is diurnal and easily tamed as a pet. Martin Dwyer notched a first-and-lastrace double after driving out Meer Kat for the 1m novice stakes and coming from off the pace to clinch the 1m handicap on Ron Hodges' Magroom. Despite the visually impressive nature of his success, the handicapper surely won't be getting carried away with this sixlength defeat of hot favourite Meer Kat, who had to be taken towards what looked the slower part of the track to obtain a clear run. |
