Megaevolution

the totality of the evolutionary processes that determine the formation of the major taxons (in animals and plants, taxonomic categories higher than the order). The term “megaevolution” was introduced by the American biologist G. G. Simpson in 1944. Because he was unable to suggest any processes or mechanisms distinguishing megaevolution from macroevolution, the term did not survive.
