Meggers, Betty J. (Jane) (1921– ) anthropologist; born in Washington, D.C. After earning a Ph.D. at Columbia University she joined the staff of the Smithsonian Institution (1954). She did extensive fieldwork in South America, focusing particularly on prehistoric lowlands cultures, cultural ecology, and trans-Pacific contracts, and she published widely.
