Meier, Konstantin Ignat’evich
Born Apr. 22 (May 4), 1881, in Riazan’; died Mar. 20, 1965, in Moscow. Soviet botanist and professor (1917). In 1903, Meier graduated from Moscow University, where he had been a student of I. N. Gorozhankin. From 1929 to 1963 he headed the subdepartment of higher plants of Moscow State University. His principal works were on algology (systematics and phylogeny of green algae and of the algae found in the Oka River, Lakes Baikal and Sivash and the White Sea) and on the morphology of higher plants (the development of the sporophyte, the phylogeny of Hepatica triloba, the development of the stem and vascular system of ferns, and the embryology of flowering plants).
