In southeastern TN, northeast of Chattanooga; organized Jan 20, 1836 from Hamilton, McMinn, Rhea, and Roane counties. Name Origin: For Return Jonathan Meigs (1764-1824), U.S. senator from OH (1808-1810), OH governor (1810-14), and U.S. postmaster general (1814-23)
