In southeastern TN, northeast of Chattanooga; organized Jan 20, 1836 from Hamilton, McMinn, Rhea, and Roane counties. Name Origin: For Return Jonathan Meigs (1764-1824), U.S. senator from OH (1808-1810), OH governor (1810-14), and U.S. postmaster general (1814-23).

Area (sq mi): 216.78 (land 194.86; water 21.92). Pop per sq mi: 59.80.
Pop 2005: 11,657. State rank: 84. Pop change: 2000-20005 5.20%; 1990-2000 38.00%. Pop 2000: 11,086 (White 97.30%; Black or African American 1.20%; Hispanic or Latino 0.60%; Asian 0.20%; Other 0.90%). Foreign born: 0.60%. Median age: 36.70.
