Melde's experiment [′mel·dēz ik‚sper·ə·mənt] (mechanics) An experiment to study transverse vibrations in a long, horizontal thread when one end of the thread is attached to a prong of a vibrating tuning fork, while the other passes over a pulley and has weights suspended from it to control the tension in the thread.
