In central TX, southeast of San Angelo; organized Jan 22, 1858 from Bexar County. Name Origin: For Michel Branaman Menard (1803-56), signer of the TX Declaration of Independence (1836), Republic of TX legislator (1840-42), and founder of Galveston.

Area (sq mi): 902.25 (land 901.91; water 0.34). Pop per sq mi: 2.40.

In central IL, north of Springfield; organized Feb 15, 1839 Sangamon County. Name Origin: For Lt. Col. Pierre Menard (1766-1844), jurist, first presiding officer of IL Territorial legislature (1812), and first lieutenant governor (1818-22).
