Menasha (mənăsh`ə), city (1990 pop. 14,711), Winnebago co., E Wis., on Lake Winnebago and the Fox River, adjacent to its twin city of Neenah; settled 1840s, inc. 1874. Menasha's large paper-making industry, which is served by water power, dates from the late 19th cent. The region at the lake outlet was visited by Jean Nicolet (c.1634; the site is marked) and other French explorers and was described by Jonathan Carver Carver, Jonathan, 1710–80, American explorer, b. Weymouth, Mass. He served in the French and Indian War and in 1766 was hired by Robert Rogers to undertake a journey to some of the Western tribes.
