Mendaña de Neyra, Alvaro de
Born 1541 or 1545; died Oct. 18, 1595, on Ndeni in the Santa Cruz Islands. Spanish navigator. Mendaña made two voyages (1567-69 and 1595) westward from Peru with the aim of discovering new lands and sea routes. During his first voyage he discovered all the important islands in the Solomons except Bougainville; on the return trip, he dis-covered an atoll in the Marshall Islands and Wake Island. During his second voyage, he discovered four islands in the Marquesas and the Santa Cruz Islands, including Ndeni. Want to thank TFD for its existence?
