Name Origin: For Cabo (Cape) Mendocino, which early records indicate was named for Antonio de Mendoza (c. 1485-1552), viceroy of New Spain in 1542, or Lorenzo Suarez de Mendoza, viceroy of New Spain (1580-83). Name merely means someone from Mendoza. Area (sq mi): 3878.14 (land 3508.97; water 369.17). Pop per sq mi: 25.10. Pop 2005: 88,161. State rank: 38. Pop change: 2000-20005 2.20%; 1990-2000 7.40%. Pop 2000: 86,265 (White 74.90%; Black or African American 0.60%; Hispanic or Latino 16.50%; Asian 1.20%; Other 17.40%). Foreign born: 10.20%. Median age: 38.90.
