Menges, Karl Heinrich 

Born Apr. 22, 1908, in Frankfurt am Main. German (now American) linguist and historian.

Menges studied in Frankfurt, Munich, and Berlin. He became a professor at the University of Ankara in 1937 and began teaching at Columbia University in 1940. He published basic works on Turkic studies, the history of the Altaic peoples, and the morphology and etymology of the Nostratic languages (comparison of the Uralic, Altaic, Dravidian, and Indo-European languages). He studied contact and genetic relationships between languages and language families (Oriental borrowings in the Slavic languages, etc.).
