Men’kov, Petr Kononovich 

Born June 2 (14), 1814, in Kashin, now in Kalinin Oblast; died Oct. 9 (21), 1875, in St. Petersburg. Russian military figure and writer; lieutenant general (1867).

Men’kov graduated from the First Cadet Corps as a lieutenant of the artillery in 1833. After graduating from the Academy of the General Staff in 1840, he served in the Main Headquarters and participated in suppressing the revolution in Hungary in 1849 and in the Crimean War of 1853-56. He was editor of the journal Voennyi sbornik from 1859 and of the newspaper Russkii invalid from 1867 to 1872. Men’kov worked with D. A. Miliutin and wrote war memoirs and works on military history.
