Menninger, William Claire

Menninger, William Claire (1899–1966) physician, psychiatrist; born in Topeka, Kans. He joined the Menninger Clinic in Topeka, which his brother, Karl, and their father had founded in 1919–20. He directed the Menninger Hospital in the 1930s, which became a model psychiatric hospital. He was influential in gaining public acceptance for psychiatry. During World War II he was chief consultant on psychiatry to the Surgeon General of the U.S. Army, and he was also a leader in the Boy Scout movement. His books include Psychiatry in a Troubled World (1948).
