In east-central WI, northwest of Lake Winnebago; organized May 1, 1961 from Shawano and Oconto counties. Name Origin: For the Menominee Indians, a tribe of Algonquian linguistic stock, who lived in the lake region where wild rice grows. The name probably means 'wild rice people.'

Pop 2005: 4,580. State rank: 72. Pop change: 2000-20005 0.40%; 1990-2000 17.30%. Pop 2000: 4,562 (White 11.50%; Black or African American 0.10%; Hispanic or Latino 2.70%; Asian 0.00%; Other 88.30%). Foreign born: 2.70%. Median age: 27.70.

On the south-central coast of the Upper Peninsula of MI on Green Bay; established as Bleecker County Mar 19, 1863 from Marquette County; name changed Mar 19, 1863. Name Origin: For the Menominee Indians, a tribe of Algonquian linguistic stock; name means 'wild rice people.'
