mercuric oxide [mər′kyu̇r·ik ′äk‚sīd]
(inorganic chemistry)
HgO A compound of mercury that exists in two forms, red mercuric oxide and yellow mercuric oxide; the red form decomposes upon heating, is insoluble in water, and is used in pigments and paints, and in ceramics; the yellow form is insoluble in water, decomposes upon heating, and is used in medicine. Also known as mercury oxide; red precipitate; yellow precipitate.

The case of intentional ingestion of approximately 40 grams of mercuric oxide by a 31-year-old was reported by Ly, Williams, and Clark (2002).
He did raise concerns about disposal of mercuric oxide other than pouring it down the drain.
Of these batteries, the ones that cause the greatest problems are ni-cad, mercuric oxide and alkaline.
