mercury switch

mercury switch [′mər·kyə·rē ‚swich]
(electricity)
A switch that is closed by making a large globule of mercury move up to the contacts and bridge them; the mercury is usually moved by tilting the entire switch.

mercury-contact switch
A wall-mounted switch used in interior electric wiring; contains a sealed glass tube of mercury which provides a silent contact when the switch is turned on.
