(mĕr'ēŏn`əthshər, –shĭr'), former county, NW Wales. In 1974 most of Merionethshire became part of the nonmetropolitan county of GwyneddGwynedd

Merionethshire

 

a former county in northwestern Wales, in the basin of the Wnion and Dee rivers. Area, 1,700 sq km; population, 35,300 (1971). The administrative center was Dolgellau. In 1974, Merionethshire became part of the new county of Gwynedd.
