Mermin, N. David (1935– ) physicist; born in New Haven, Conn. He performed research at the University of Birmingham (1961–63) and the University of California: San Diego (1963–64), before joining Cornell (1964). A theoretical and solid state physicist, he criticized the Nobel Prize system for fostering competition among scientists rather than encouraging pure research (1989).
