Merrifield, R. (Robert) Bruce (1921– ) biochemist; born in Fort Worth, Texas. He joined the staff at Rockefeller Institute (later University) in 1949. In the early 1960s he developed the method of manufacturing proteins in the laboratory known as "solid phase peptide synthesis." He was awarded the Nobel Prize in chemistry (1984). |
