In south-central NH, north of Manchester; organized Jul 1, 1823 from Rickingham and Hillsborough counties. Name Origin: For the Merrimack River, which bisects the county.

Area (sq mi): 956.49 (land 934.43; water 22.06). Pop per sq mi: 157.20.
Pop 2005: 146,881. State rank: 3. Pop change: 2000-20005 7.80%; 1990-2000 13.50%. Pop 2000: 136,225 (White 96.40%; Black or African American 0.50%; Hispanic or Latino 1.00%; Asian 0.90%; Other 1.40%). Foreign born: 3.20%. Median age: 37.70.
Income 2000: per capita $23,208; median household $48,522; Pop below poverty level: 5.90%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $30,907-$32,633.

    Merrimack County Superior Court Judge Bruce Mohl has ordered Precision Technology of Pembroke not to sell any of its assets, after the company shut down last month with no warning and failed to pay at least some of its employees.
    It's no small challenge, suggests architect Jonathan Smith whose design firm, Warrenstreet Architects of Concord, New Hampshire, recently completed a $40 million replacement for the 143-year-old Merrimack County Nursing Home in Boscowan, New Hampshire.
    Affected PNPs in Merrimack County must file their application for physical damages as soon as possible.
