Merritt, Wesley

Merritt, Wesley (1834–1910) soldier; born in New York City. He grew up in Illinois, and after graduating from West Point (1860), he saw service as a cavalry officer during the Civil War, including Gettysburg. From 1866 to 1879, he served on the western frontier; he was superintendent of West Point (1882–87). After years at various administrative posts, he was given command of the army forces that captured Manila from the Spanish in 1898. He briefly served as military governor of the Philippines (1898–99) before retiring from the army in 1900.
