Symeon Metaphrastes

Byzantine writer of the second half of the tenth century.

Symeon Metaphrastes compiled a menologion, a register of 148 Greek lives of the saints arranged in the order of the liturgical calendar. He reworked or rewrote entirely some of the lives. The menologion became the predominant work of its kind in the Byzantine church and facilitated the standardization of the liturgy. The identification of Symeon Metaphrastes with Symeon Logothetes is disputable. Symeon Metaphrastes also wrote poems and sermons.

WORKS

In Migne, J. P. Patrologia graeca, vols. 114–16.
