(organic chemistry)
CH3OC(CH3)3A volatile, flammable, colorless liquid, with a boiling point of 55°C (131°F) and a terpene-like odor, originally used in gasoline as an octane enhancer and lead substitute, more recently used to reduce engine exhaust emissions. Abbreviated MTBE.

The 13-year-old class action suit was settled last year, with 17 states and 153 water districts sharing in $423 million, minus legal fees, after allegations of water contamination by the gasoline additive MTBE, or methyl tertiary butyl ether.
Congress had recently mandated replacement of the groundwater pollutant methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) with ethanol, another additive that decreases pollution when blended with gasoline.
