(organic chemistry)
CH3OC(CH3)3A volatile, flammable, colorless liquid, with a boiling point of 55°C (131°F) and a terpene-like odor, originally used in gasoline as an octane enhancer and lead substitute, more recently used to reduce engine exhaust emissions. Abbreviated MTBE.

Congress had recently mandated replacement of the groundwater pollutant methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) with ethanol, another additive that decreases pollution when blended with gasoline.
The latest barbs blame higher gasoline prices on planned conversions from methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) to ethanol this spring.
One of the major changes is the introduction of ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel and the removal of methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE).
