iodoform (īō`dəfôrm'), CHI₃, yellow crystalline solid that has a penetrating odor. It melts at 119°C; and is insoluble in water but soluble in ether or ethanol. Iodoform was formerly used as an antiseptic. It is produced when a methyl ketone, acetaldehyde, or an alcohol with the formula RCHOHCH₃ (where R is hydrogen or an alkyl or aryl group) is treated with sodium hydroxide and iodine.

CHI₃A yellow, hexagonal solid; melting point 119°C; soluble in chloroform, ether, and water; has weak bactericidal qualities and is used in ointments for minor skin diseases. Also known as triiodomethane.

Iodoform

(triiodomethane) CHI₃, an antiseptic. A bright yellow powder, it is used for the external treatment of infected wounds, sores, and fistulas; it also comes as an ointment.
