ergodic theory [ər′gäd·ik ′thē·ə·rē]
(mathematics)
The study of measure-preserving transformations.
(statistical mechanics)
Mathematical theory which attempts to show that the various possible microscopic states of a system are equally probable, and that the system is therefore ergodic.
