a department in France, in the basin of the Moselle River, mainly on the Lorraine plateau. Area, 5,300 sq km; population, 725,000 (1973). The prefecture is the city of Nancy. Meurthe-et-Moselle is an industrial region. In 1968, 36 percent of the working population was engaged in industry, and 6 percent in agriculture. The department is France’s principal producer of iron ore. Meurthe-et-Moselle’s industries include heavy metallurgy and the production of chemicals and clothing. The main agricultural products are fruits and grain.
