Meyer, Karl (1899–1990) biochemist; born in Kerpen, Germany. He left Germany (1930) for the University of California: Berkeley before joining Columbia University to direct the department of biochemistry at the Eye Institute (1933–67). His research team identified and analyzed basic chemical components of connective tissues. On retirement, he spent ten years at Yeshiva University in Israel, returning to Columbia as emeritus.
