Miaskovsky, Nikolai Yakovlevich (nyĭkəlī` yä` kəvlyĭvĭch myəskôf`skē), 1881–1950, Russian composer, b. near Warsaw, grad. St. Petersburg Conservatory, 1911. Professor of composition at the Moscow Conservatory from 1921 to 1950, he was among the most prolific composers of symphonies in the 20th cent., completing 27. The best known of these is probably the 21st, the Symphonie-Fantaisie (1940). He also wrote many chamber and piano pieces as well as tone poems, cantatas, and scores for films.
