midlife crisis

doubt and anxiety experienced by many people in their fifth decade, 40 years being the entry point to the category middle age. This marks the end of their youthful period and of the opportunities and goals that life seemed to offer when they were young. People may reflect upon their lives, revalue their relationships and contemplate the prospect of the biological deterioration associated with AGEING. In occupational terms it involves acknowledging the limits to personal success and achievement, and in domestic terms it involves transition away from active parenting as children leave home to establish their own adult relationships. See also LIFE COURSE, LIFE CRISIS.
